Modus File Format Change

Summary

Starting with the March 2025 release, Modus uses a new .modus file format instead of the previous .space format.

Why the change?

In previous versions of Modus, users had a .space file for project data and a .jpg file for the project thumbnail. This update allows both to be combined into a single file, making for a better experience when moving and emailing project files.

Most importantly, this change also enables better integration with Windows Explorer. Explorer can now display the thumbnail on the .modus file, simplifying file management outside of the Modus Launcher. Finally, double clicking a .modus file will automatically pull it up in the launcher.

How does this impact me?

Very little! We’re not automatically migrating your old .space files to .modus files, and Modus will always be able to open legacy .space files so there’s no need to manually migrate old files, either. The file format change only impacts what happens when you save a project.

If you open a legacy .space file and re-save it, we automatically convert it to the new .modus format and remove the old .space and thumbnail file. As with all other Modus updates, older versions of Modus cannot open files saved from a newer version.

Can I still manually edit project files?

If you’ve become familiar with the .space file format and are comfortable manually editing them, you’ll still have that option. The new .modus format is simply a renamed .zip file. Inside it, you’ll find the familiar .space and .jpg files you’ve become accustomed to. You can edit them and zip them back into a .modus file, or you can keep the legacy naming convention of .space and .jpg and open them like you always have.
